BURLINGTON, VT --- Brad Ditter was 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a three-run homer as the Vermont Expos snapped a six-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory over the Staten Island Yankees in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Centennial Field.
The Expos jumped out to a 6-0 lead with four runs in the second and two more in the third. Edgardo Baez led off the second with a solo home run and Ditter capped the inning with his three-run shot. Vermont's two runs in the second came on an RBI single by John Poppert and an RBI double from Steve Mortimer.
Vermont starter A.J. Wideman allowed just three singles and struckout seven over the first five innings, but the Yankees reached him and reliever David Trahan for five runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Cody Elders started the Staten Island rally with an RBI double and Edwar Gonzalez followed with a two-run single. The Yankees scored two more runs and had runners at second and third with no outs, but Trahan was able to get out of the inning with the Expos ahead 6-5.
The lead stayed 6-5 until the eighth inning when a walk and Ditter double put Expos runners on second and third with no outs. Yankees reliever David Cuen got back-to-back strikeouts, but Ofilio Castro singled home two runs to give Vermont an 8-5 lead.
Ditter, Castro, Poppert and Mortimer all had two hits for the Expos (3-6), who won for the first time in three home games this season. Jordan Devoir, Hector Zamora and Kevin Nelson had all two hits for Staten Island (2-6).
Wideman (1-0) finished with three runs allowed on five hits over five-plus innings for the victory, while Trahan allowed two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts over three innings and Francisco Sandoval pitched the ninth inning for his first save. Miguel Santana (0-2) allowed six runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings for the loss.
The Expos and Yankees meet again on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. with Jim Henderson on the mound for Vermont. It is American Red Cross Night at the ballpark and also Have A Catch Sunday as fans will be able to go out onto Centennial Field after the game to play catch.
