Explorers Shut Out 1-0 By Railcats

Gary, IN-----The Explorers had several opportunities to score, but in the end were shutout 1-0 by Gary SouthShore Tuesday here at the US Steel Yards.

The only run scored in the contest came in the third inning when Cristian Guerrero singled with two outs that scored Adam Klein from second base to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead.

The Explorers had base runners in scoring position in six of the nine innings leaving a total of nine runners on base for the game. In the first inning after back-to-back singles by Eliezer Mesa and Leugim Barroso, winning pitcher Billy Spottiswood retired the next three batters and the Explorers came up empty.

It was the eighth time the Explorers had been shutout this season with four of the shutouts coming in the last two weeks.

Explorers losing hurler Dan Jurik pitched seven innings, scattered four hits while walking four and striking out five. In the eight losses for Jurik this season, the Explorers offense has not scored a run in four of those losses.

Sioux City outhit Gary nine to five, but the X's lost their fifth straight game and have now lost 13 of their last 14 contest. Barroso, Austin Gallagher and Bryan Pounds all had three hits apiece for the Explorers.

The third game of the series will be Wednesday at Gary with game time set for 7:15pm.
