Explorers Continue To Bolster Pitching Staff

SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers have once again bolstered their pitching staff by re-signing RHP Ty Marotz and RHP Mike Phelps to 2010 American Association contracts. Marotz and Phelps join a great pitching staff that already includes David Trahan, Chris Jones, Garret Holleran, and Eddy De La Cruz.
Marotz will return for his 5th season in Sioux City in 2010. In 2009, Marotz posted a 6 - 9 record with a 4.20 ERA while primarily serving as a member of the starting rotation. In (17) starts and 120.0 innings of work, Marotz struck out 82 batters while allowing 55 walks. In his (5) seasons of professional baseball (4 in Sioux City) Marotz has a career 3.69 ERA, while recording (224) strike outs compared to just (100) walks while holding opposing hitters to a.268 average.
The Sioux City Explorers acquired Mike Phelps, on July 17th in a trade with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Independent Frontier League. Phelps made an immediate impact out of the bullpen for the X's by appearing in (5) games without giving up an earned run and after receiving a chance to join the starting rotation on August 11th, Phelps made (4) starts and went a minimum of 6.0 innings in each of his starts and finished the season with a 2-2 record and a 2.95 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a miniscule.202 batting average.
"Bringing back Marotz and Phelps helps our pitching staff become one of the best in the league. Ty had a tough luck year last year as a starter, as he took the loss in several games when he pitched very well but our offense did not provide him with any run support. We always had a chance when it was his turn to pitch. Mike performed well out of the bullpen and was then put into the starting rotation toward the end of the season to see what he could do and Bobby Post and I were very pleased how he performed. Their combined experience will help our starting rotation," comments manager Les Lancaster.
