'Experienced' Legends set for 2015; Pioneer League MVP joins returnees

April 8, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Experience is often in short supply in the Class A South Atlantic League, but the 2015 Lexington Legends will go into the season with a roster that contains 12 players who have been with the Legends before, including four who played more than 100 games with Lexington in 2014.

Outfielders Alfredo Escalera and Elier Hernandez, infielder Humberto Arteaga and catcher Chad Johnson return to Lexington in 2015 after a full 2014 season with the Legends. Though they bring experience, those four are still very young players; only Arteaga has reached age 21.

Other players on the 2015 roster who saw at least some action with the Legends are pitchers Pedro Fernandez, Ashton Goudeau, Kevin McCarthy, Nik Stephenson and Matt Tenuta; infielder Carlos Garcia, who led the Legends with 31 stolen bases in 80 games last year; and outfielder Samir Duenez. Pitcher Colin Rodgers was with the Legends for part of the 2013 season.

The Legends will also welcome power-hitting first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, who was the Most Valuable Player in the Pioneer League in 2014. Playing for current Legends manager Omar Ramirez at Idaho Falls, O'Hearn, the Kansas City Royals' eighth-round pick in the 2014 draft, led the short-season Pioneer League (70-game schedule) in runs scored with 61, hits with 90, on-base-plus slugging percentage at 1.034 and slugging percentage at .590. He finished second in on-base percentage at .444 and total bases with 147, third in home runs with 13 and batting average at .361. He was fourth in RBI (54 in 64 games) and walks (39), and tied for sixth in doubles with 16, and ninth in both games and at-bats. He led all Royals minor leaguers in batting average.

Tenuta, a left-hander, and Fernandez were regular starters for the Legends last season. Right-hander Torey Deshazier was a Pioneer League All-Star for Idaho Falls, where he led the league in earned run average at 3.17.
