Expansion Shock new number one in poll

Published on May 31, 2006 under arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The expansion Spokane Shock has claimed the No. 1 ranking in the weekly Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 league office announced today. The Shock collected 244 of a possible 264 points and 13-of-23 first place votes in securing the top position. Spokane defeated the Quad City Steamwheelers this past Saturday at home, 68-63, to improve to a league-best 7-1. The Shock, winners of three straight games, are the fifth team this season to obtain the No. 1 spot. They are also the fourth new No. 1 in as many weeks.

The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (6-2, 204 points), who entered Week 9 in the pole position, dropped to fourth this week after a 53-50 road loss at Bossier-Shreveport. The Battle Wings were 0-7 before their Week 9 upset of the Yard Dawgz, who spent just one week at No. 1. The Memphis Xplorers (7-2, 219 points, 5 first place votes) moved up two spots from No. 4 to No. 2 on the strength of their recent road win at Amarillo, 34-27. Filling out the top five this week are the No. 3 Florida Firecats (6-2, 211 points, 1 first place vote) and the No. 5 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (6-2, 175 points, 2 first place votes).

The Week 10 schedule features three matchups of Top 12 teams. On Saturday, No. 11 Tulsa plays at No. 7 Manchester, No. 9 Central Valley plays at No. 1 Spokane and No. 12 Amarillo plays at No. 6 Bakersfield.

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 12 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
