Ex-Big Leaguer joins Drillers staff

Orlando Merced, a veteran of 13 major league seasons, has been added to the Tulsa Drillers coaching staff. Merced, in his first professional coaching assignment, will serve as the team's hitting coach. He joins manager Stu Cole and pitching coach Bo McLaughlin on the Tulsa staff.

The 39-year-old Merced played for seven different major league teams from 1990 through 2003. His best season came in 1995 with the Pittsburgh Pirates when he hit .300 with 15 home runs and 83 runs batted in.

Overall, he hit .277 in his 13 big league seasons. His final year as a player came in 2003 with the Houston Astros.

Merced replaces Darron Cox in the Tulsa dugout. Cox has been named the manager of the Tri-City Dust Devils. The Dust Devils are a Rookie League team of the Colorado Rockies and play in the Northwest League.
