Somerset Patriots News Release

Newark, NJ - Carl Everett drove in three runs, two on his homer in the 6th inning giving the Newark Bears the lead, one they would not relinquish in a 4-2 win over the Somerset Patriots on Sunday night as the two clubs split a four-game set at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Everett stood in against Josh Miller in the 6th inning with Daryle Ward on first base and fouled away four straight pitches. Finally, Everett pulled a line drive over the right field wall, giving Newark the 4-2 advantage, capping off a three-RBI game for Everett. Miller (7-7) retired the final eight men after the homer to close out his third complete game of the year in a losing effort.

Everetts homer broke a 2-2 tie after Somerset took the early lead. Wayne Lydon doubled to start the affair against 23-year-old Mike Loree and two batters later, Jeff Nettles drove Lydon home for the games first run. Nettles reached base in the 3rd off Loree (4-7) and was brought home with two outs by Jason Belcher. Miller was dealing early, retiring the first seven men he faced before a Gabe Suarez single broke up the clean slate in the 3rd. But back-to-back base hits against Miller in the 4th set up Everett's first RBI, a bloop single into center field bringing Pablo Ozuna home. Isaiah Kaaihue doubled to start the 5th and Kennard Jones lined a two-out base hit to right field, bring the tying run in. Miller used just 100 pitches over 8.0 innings, surrendering eight hits and four runs with no walks and four strikeouts to his line.

Loree was put in line for the win after throwing a perfect 6th, his only 1-2-3 inning of the night. The youngster, in his second career start against Somerset, scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings, walking three and striking out four. The Patriots had chances early against Loree to pad their lead but stranded six men in the first three innings and ten for the game. Derek Blacksher, Michael Nix, and in his return to the Newark bullpen 37-year-old Armando Benitez combined for three scoreless innings to shut down Somerset the rest of the way.

Somerset (6-11, 42-45) begins a four-game series with the Long Island Ducks on Monday night. Coverage begins at 7:00 pm from Suffolk County Sports Park on 1450 WCTC-AM and online at www.wctcam.com and www.somersetpatriots.com.
