Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL--The Florida Everblades hosted the Wheeling Nailers for the first time on Wednesday night at Germain Arena. Cleve Kinley, a former Everblade, scored the lone goal of the first period for Wheeling. Florida dominated the second, scoring three goals from Ross Carlson, A.J. Thelen and Colin Nicholson. The Nailers tried to narrow the gap in the third with a goal from Casey Pierro-Zabotel, but were unsuccessful and Florida added another two markers from Brandon Buck and Ross Carlson for a final score of 5-2.
The first period witnessed both teams jockeying for position. Chris Beckford-Tseu denied Wheeling with an impressive kick save. Wheeling got on the board first when the Everblades' Steve McJannet took a two-minute penalty for elbowing. The power-play tally was scored by former Everblade Cleve Kinley with assists from Kevin Schmidt and Chris Capraro. The face-off moved to center ice and right off the draw, gloves came off. Benn Olson had a showing against Ryan Schnell and the on-ice officials awarded both players five minutes for fighting.
The Everblades outshot the Nailers 15-13 in the first they entered the stanza down a goal. Facing a one goal deficit, Ross Carlson scored the equalizer off of a shot from Kevin Baker and Ryan Lang. A.J. Thelen scored his seventh goal of the season with 11:12 remaining in the second. Colin Nicholson and Steve McJannet were credited with the assist. The Everblades continued to pepper Brad Thiessen with under a minute remaining in the period. The puck dropped on Wheeling's end and Colin Nicholson shot one home off the draw with only 39 seconds remaining to increase Florida's lead 3-2.
Nailers forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel made it a one-goal game when he beat Beckford-Tseu off of a pass from Thomas Beauregard. Florida kept the pressure on and notched another one on the board. The fourth Everblades goal of the game was earned by Brandon Buck with help from Jordan Morrison and Scott Hotham. Ross Carlson scored his second goal of the game with only 11 seconds remaining. Steve McJannet assisted on the tally and the Florida Everblades defeated the Wheeling Nailers 5-2.
