Florida Everblades News Release

ESTERO, FL -- The Gwinnett Gladiators scored four goals, including two empty netters in the third period to defeat the Florida Everblades 6-3 at Germain Arena Wednesday Night.

Florida raced out to a 10-1 shots on goal advantage halfway through the first period, but Gwinnett forward Joey Haddad scored his team leading ninth goal of the season right off an offensive zone faceoff to give his team a 1-0 lead after the first period.

The Everblades tied the game at 3:30 of the second period, as Mike McKenzie streaked into the zone on the left wing side and fired a slapshot from the circle past Gwinnett goaltender Marc Chevrie. The Gladiators countered with a goal of their own three minutes later when Collin Vock took a breakaway pass into the zone and beat Florida netminder Pat Nagle for the go ahead goal.

The Everblades rallied back again, taking advantage of the power play. David Rutherford fielded a pass in the slot and snapped a shot high into the corner of the net to tie the game at two after 40 minutes played.

The Gladiators took control of the game in the third scoring four goals. The first was registered on the power play when Shane Sims fired a shot from the point which was redirected off an Everblades stick in front and into the net for the goal giving Gwinnett a 3-2 lead. Nikita Kashirsky made it 4-2, on his fourth of the season at 6:27.

The game took a chippy turn halfway through the period. Haddad was handed a five-minute major penalty for elbowing and a game misconduct. Despite the lengthy penalty, the Everblades were unable to convert with a power play marker. Florida rolled the dice pulling the goaltender on the tail end of the penalty, but Andy Brandt scored an empty net goal to extend the lead to 5-2.

The Everblades Rylan Galiardi scored a goal with one minute remaining, but Gwinnett added another empty net goal with 28 seconds to go in regulation to seal the 6-3 victory.
