Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - Seattle Mariners' pitchers Evan Scribner and Tony Zych are slated to pitch on a Major League rehab assignment for the Jackson Generals on Monday night at The Ballpark at Jackson against the Biloxi Shuckers. Scribner and Zych are the first two Mariners to rehab with Jackson since Shawn Kelley pitched in three games for the Generals in 2011.
Zych, 26, started the 2016 season in the Mariners' bullpen and pitched in 10 games before he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 3 with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff. While still dealing with the injury, Zych was later transferred to the 60-day disabled list June 24.
In 10 relief appearances with Seattle this season, Zych had an ERA of 3.00 after giving up five runs (four earned) over 12.0 innings. He continued to rack up strikeouts, picking up 19 punch-outs compared to just eight walks. The 26-year-old's first rehab assignment was August 12 with the Arizona League Mariners, and the Zych worked a scoreless frame.
The reliever made his MLB debut with the Mariners on September 4, 2015, becoming the last player of more than 18,000 players to playing the big leagues listed in the baseball encyclopedia on the complete opposite end of former Diamond Jaxx hurler David Aardsma. In his first taste of the big leagues Zych struck out 24 and walked only three batters in 18.1 innings with a 2.95 earned run average.
Zych was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 4th Round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of the University of Louisville. The righty spent four years in the Cubs' organization before he was traded to Seattle just prior to the start of the 2015 season. He began last year with Jackson, striking out 18 without walking a batter in 16.2 innings for the Generals.
Scribner, 31, was acquired by Seattle in December from Oakland in exchange for former General Trey Cochran-Gill. The reliever started the season on the Major League disabled list with a right lat strain and has not pitched for the Mariners yet.
The Diamondbacks originally took Scribner in the 28th Round of the 2007 MLB Draft out of Central Connecticut. The righty spent time in the Diamondbacks, Padres, and Athletics' organizations prior to joining the Mariners. The righty made his Major League debut in 2011 with the Padres.
In parts of five seasons, Scribner has appeared in 125 Major League games for the Padres and Athletics. Over 147.2 career innings, Scribner has 134 strikeouts compared to only 27 walks and an ERA of 4.21.
The veteran has made three rehab appearances already for Class A Advanced Bakersfield and the Arizona League Mariners. He threw a scoreless inning in his only outing with the Blaze, but gave up four runs in 1.2 innings for Seattle's AZL affiliate in a pair of appearances.
Zych and Scribner will be assigned numbers prior to first pitch. Jackson's roster now stands at 25 active players with four on the disabled list and two on a Major League rehab assignment. An updated roster is attached.
