New York Dragons News Release
After spending just a week on the team's practice squad, Bronx-native DS Angel Estrada has been signed to 24-man active roster. A rookie out of West Virginia, Estrada began the season with the Nashville Kats where he started in each of the three games he appeared in.
"I'm just thrilled to be here with the Dragons and back with my family," said Estrada, who still lives in the Bronx. " Coach Harding gave me an opportunity and I took advantage of it. I'm just happy to be here."
Estrada (6-2, 215) made a name for himself when the Kats visited the Coliseum to play the Dragons earlier this season on February 19. In the game, he recorded his first AFL interception along with a pass break up and a Nashville-high 7.5 tackles. In total, Estrada has 10.5 tackles for the season.
"Angel is a tremendous pickup for us. He's a great athlete," said Dragons' head coach Weylan Harding. "We saw a lot of potential in him when he played against us a few months ago. He's a local guy that wants to be here and wants to play for the Dragons."
Estrada began his college career at Long Island's Nassau Community College where he earned Junior College All-American honors in 2000. In 2001, he began his career at West Virginia as a walk-on and earned a scholarship after the fourth day of practice. As a junior at WVU, Estrada was named to the 2001 Second-Team All-Big East, earning Big East Defensive Player of the Week honors twice that season.
Estrada played football and basketball at John F. Kennedy High School in Bronx, NY. In the past off-season, he worked as a residential counselor located in the Bronx.
In another roster move, the Dragons placed OS Markeith Cooper on the Injured Reserve list.
This week, the Dragons will be in Orlando to complete their two-game road swing versus the Predators. The game can be heard on 1050 ESPN Radio with Peter Schwartz on the play-by-play and Wayne Morris as the analyst.
