Essay contest winners earn money for college

OMAHA - The Omaha Royals and the Nebraska State Treasurer's Office are hosting the 4th annual essay contest "Why I Want to Go to College." Any 7th or 8th grade student is invited to write an essay about their educational goals and dreams for the future. The goal of the contest is to encourage students to recognize the importance of a college education.
"We are excited to once again partner with the Omaha Royals in hosting the essay contest and look forward to the students participating in this learning experience. We want kids to realize their dream of attending college, and we hope the essay contest will help them develop their future goals," said State Treasurer Ron Ross.
This year's prizes include 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each of the three Nebraska Congressional Districts. First place winners will receive $1,000 towards one of Nebraska's College Savings Plans, four tickets to the Nebraska-Creighton game at Rosenblatt Stadium on Tuesday, May 16th, four passes to the Henry Doorly Zoo and a night's stay at a premier hotel in the Omaha area. Second and third place winners receive $500 and $300, respectively, towards the college savings plans, as well as the NU-CU game tickets and zoo passes.
The essay cannot be more than 750 words and must include the required cover sheet. To learn more about the requirements for the essay, students interested in the contest should log on to www.treasurer.org and click on "College Savings".
Each essay should be sent to the Omaha Royals office, care of Cassie Duncan, at 1202 Bert Murphy Avenue, Omaha, NE 68107. All essays must be postmarked by Friday, April 21st. A committee will judge the essays on content. The winners will receive notification by Monday, May 1st.
