Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Innovative giveaways, great theme nights, family-friendly events, three fireworks shows and the return of Bark in the Park and Mullet Night. That's just a sampling of what's in store as part of the 2006 Portland Beavers promotional schedule, released in its entirety today.
With tickets starting at just $8, a Beavers game at PGE Park continues to be one of the most affordable entertainment options around. And the following list of activities is sure to make for yet another action-packed, 72-game home schedule in 2006. The regular season begins April 6.
GIVEAWAYS GALORE Once again in 2006, a long list of premium giveaways highlights the promotional schedule, starting with PGE's traditional giveaway of schedule magnets during Opening Weekend, April 6-8. The Beavers will feature Bobblehead giveaways on June 2 (FOX 12's Andy Carson), Aug. 12 (Rodney McCray), Aug. 19 (UPN 49's Daria) and Aug. 26 (Jack Cain, Beavers senior advisor and longtime Portland baseball owner). Other giveaways to highlight the schedule include Tony Gwynn figurines (April 9), team photos (May 28), RE/MAX youth jerseys (June 17-18), Padres Mr. Potato Head (July 15), Beavers caps (July 28), PGE/Beavers lunchboxes (July 29), and Beavers 2007 calendars (Aug. 27).
BLOOPER REEL Among the more unusual giveaway items this season, the Beavers are featuring Rodney McCray "Bobblefence" Night on Aug. 12, with the first 2,000 fans in attendance receiving the one-of-a-kind item. McCray, who played 67 games in the majors, is best known for his infamous crash through the outfield fence at PGE Park (then known as Civic Stadium) in a game between the Beavers and McCray's Vancouver Canadians on May 27, 1991. McCray literally barreled through one of the wooden panels in the fence while chasing a fly ball, earning him blooper immortality as the star of the video clip that is still shown at sporting arenas and on news clips around the world.
LIGHT UP THE SKY Fireworks are always a favorite at PGE Park, and this season, the Beavers are featuring three post-game fireworks shows, with the first one following the Opening Night game against Sacramento on April 6. The remaining two fireworks shows are May 13 and July 4.
TAKE THE (OLD-SCHOOL) SHIRTS OFF OUR BACK Enjoy the weekends with the Beavers this season in throwback style, as the club features a new addition to the promotional lineup. Saturdays are "Retro Saturdays," with the Beavers donning replica uniforms from the 1956 season. On Aug. 26, the final Saturday home game of the season, more than 25 lucky fans will take home a game-worn throwback jersey as part of the team's "Jersey Off Our Back" promotion.
OLDIES BUT GOODIES What would a promotional schedule be without Mullet Night and Bark in the Park? The Beavers' annual tribute to the infamous '80s hairstyle falls on July 27, while Bark in the Park, an event that allows fans to bring their dogs to the game, returns on July 5. Other familiar favorites include: Little League Weekend (June 17-18), PGE "Score One For Safety" (July 29), Proud to be a Padre Day (July 30), Latino Night (Aug. 11), Scout Night (Aug. 19), Mascot Mania (Aug. 20) and Fan Appreciation Day (Aug. 27).
THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT The Blues Brothers Act returns to PGE Park on Aug. 19, while the Spitball Gang will be on hand to entertain the crowd on June 17. Kids won't want to miss appearances from Arnold (from "Hey Arnold") and two "Rugrats" characters on June 12 and SpongeBob SquarePants on July 16.
THURSDAY NIGHT AT PGE PARK - THE PLACE TO BE Let's face it, there's no better place to be on a warm Thursday evening than PGE Park. The Beavers schedule prominently features 11 Thursday home games, with each of those nights including a special theme and the same great atmosphere entertainment-seekers have enjoyed in the past. Check out the complete promotional schedule for a full list of Thursday events.
LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE? The Beavers promotional schedule includes four Businessperson Specials (May 29, June 28, Aug. 1, Aug. 22). Game time on those days is 12 noon, so enjoy an extended lunch break or make a day out of it by ducking out of work for the afternoon with co-workers or clients.
ULTIMATE FIELD TRIPS A great combination of fun and learning, a trio of Art & Science of Baseball School Days dots the 2006 promotional schedule. On April 11, April 25 and May 16, thousands of area students will take advantage of the ultimate field trip, enjoying the excitement of a Beavers game and learning from educational interactive displays. First pitch is 11:05 a.m. for all three dates. Gates open at 9 a.m.
FOR A GOOD CAUSE The Beavers are again teaming with Health Net and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for "Strike Out Breast Cancer Day" on Aug. 13. The Beavers will wear limited-edition pink and black jerseys that will be awarded to lucky fans through a special silent auction during the game. Proceeds raised will benefit breast cancer research. The first 2,000 fans in attendance on Aug. 13 receive a commemorative pink baseball ... As part of Back-to-School Day on Aug. 20, the Beavers are encouraging fans to bring new school items to donate as part of their efforts to support Schoolhouse Supplies ... "Strike Out ALS Night" is June 19.
THANKS, MOM AND DAD On Mother's Day (May 14), the Beavers will be giving out flowers to the first 1,000 moms in attendance, and one lucky mother will take home a shiny new piece of jewelry as the result of the Mother's Day Diamond Dig after the game. Dad gets his turn on Father's Day (June 18), with pop having the chance to win a trip to a Seattle Mariners game.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Regardless of day, the Beavers feature a theme for every game, including: Sports Radio 1080 The Fan Baseball Bingo on Mondays, Taco Tuesdays ($1 tacos), Zenner's Dollar Dog Wednesdays ($1 hot dogs), Miller Lite Thursdays, FOX 12 and UPN 49 Family Fridays, Fred Meyer Retro Saturdays and American Family Insurance Kids Sundays.
