Winston-Salem Dash News Release
KINSTON, NC (JULY 20, 2010) - The Dash committed four errors that led to three unearned Kinston runs, and the Indians beat Winston-Salem 4-2 on Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium. The game was called in the top of the eighth inning when a brief, but fierce period of rain rendered the field unplayable.
Winston-Salem (13-11, 56-38) scored in the first inning for the second straight night. The first three batters singled off Joe Gardner (8-4). Jon Gilmore's base hit brought home Brandon Short for the game's first run, making it 1-0 Dash.
Kinston (9-14, 45-48) plated an unearned run in the bottom of the first against Terry Doyle. Lucas Montero walked to start the inning. Karexon Sanchez bounced a ball to second baseman Drew Garcia, whose throw to second base brought Mike Richard off the bag for an error, allowing both men to reach safely. After a walk to Bo Greenwell loaded the bases, Chun Chen hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Montero and tying the game at one.
The Dash went back up by one in the third inning. Short was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved to third base on a passed ball and a fielder's choice. Jon Gilmore then had an RBI groundout to the shortstop, making it 2-1 Winston-Salem.
Again, the Indians immediately tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Karexon Sanchez, the only earned run allowed by Doyle (5-5) all night.
The K-Tribe grabbed its first lead in the fourth inning, as Doyle was let down by his defense. Kyle Bellows reached on a throwing error by Gilmore and scored on an RBI single by Donnie Webb to put Kinston ahead 3-2.
Errors continued to hurt the Dash in the fifth inning. Doyle tried to pick off Montero at first base, but his throw skipped past Seth Loman and Montero went all the way to third. He scored when Sanchez singled to right, doubling the Kinston lead.
Travis Turek pitched a scoreless seventh inning and came back out to face Seth Loman in the top of the eighth. After missing on two pitches, a short thunderstorm halted play. The Grainger Stadium grounds crew struggled to completely unfold the tarp, leaving the right side of the infield exposed to the hardest of the rain that poured down in Kinston. After a 44-minute delay, the umpiring crew decided to call the game because of the condition of the field, coupled with the presence of more thunderstorms in the area.
Because it was an official game with one team leading, the contest was shortened to seven innings. Gardner got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits in six innings. Doyle was dealt his second straight loss, giving up four runs, but only one earned run, in six frames. He has given up just one earned run in each of his last two starts, but has been charged the loss in each outing. Turek collected his second save with a scoreless seventh.
The four Dash errors tied a season-high. It was the fourth time this season Winston-Salem has committed four errors in a game.
Winston plays its final 2010 regular season game at Grainger Stadium in a Wednesday morning affair. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and features RHP Dylan Axelrod (5-1, 2.23) opposing RHP Austin Adams (1-0, 1.62). The game broadcast begins at 10:45 on www.wsdash.com .
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Thursday for a series against the Potomac Nationals. Major league lefty Scott Olsen is expected to make a rehab start for the P-Nats against Winston-Salem.
