Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash- The Walla Walla Sweets (3-1) dropped their first game of the season 8-5 to the Kelowna Falcons (3-1) on Tuesday night. The Sweets and the Falcons are now tied atop the North Division standings.
The scoring started out early for the Falcons as they crossed the plate twice in the first frame. It was the first deficit the Sweets had faced all season.
Walla Walla countered in the fourth with a run and then took the lead on Chris McCready's (College of the Canyons) first Sweets home run in the fifth, a two-run shot.
The Falcons tied it in the sixth, but Walla Walla took the lead again in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Hayden Duer (Cal State Monterey Bay).
That lead would not hold for long as the Sweets committed three errors in the seventh inning that led to five Falcon runs. The Sweets tacked a run in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch, but they lost 8-5.
Chris Murphy (San Diego) pitched well in his first appearance as a Sweet, going four innings in his start, only giving up one hit and one earned run while striking out seven. He touched 93 miles per hour on his fastball.
On the offensive side, Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga) went 4-4 and is now 8-14 to start the season as a Sweet.
These two clubs will be back in action tomorrow at 7:05 at Borleske Stadium with the Sweets going for the series tie.
