Enforcers Take Battle of Top Two, Beat Thunderbirds in OT, 3-2

February 24, 2019 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Elmira Enforcers News Release

Entering Sunday afternoon, the Thunderbirds and the Enforcers had both gone 1-1 on the weekend. As both teams looked for a weekend series win it was clear that these two teams are pretty evenly matched especially down the stretch as the number one and number two seeds in the FHL have both gone on elongated winning streaks.

In front of a great Sunday afternoon crowd of 3,150 fans the first period started off with a bang as Ahmed Mahfouz scored, his 23rdstraight game with a point. The shot came off of Christian Pavlas and lay there for Mahfouz to put the shot right over the Thunderbirds netminder. The rest of the period would go back and forth, but the shots on goal would favor the Thunderbirds who took a 13-8 lead on the shot board, but Elmira led 1-0 after one.

The Enforcers had two big penalties against them early in the second period, but the penalty kill unit did their job killing the penalties and when they got their chance on the power play it took all of :16 seconds for the Enforcers to cash in as Glen Patterson scored on loose puck in the crease as he shoved it home for a 2-0 lead. Carolina would not be deterred though as Peter Panacek buried one by Cody Porter off a face off that brought it back to 2-0.

In the third period Michael Bunn beat Porter to bring the game to a tie and despite a lot of back and forth play neither side was able to claim victory in the 60 minutes. It took only 20 seconds of overtime though as Stepan Timofeyev ripped one by the league leading goaltender in almost every category for the 3-2 victory, the first time the Enforcers have ever defeated the Carolina Thunderbirds!

The Enforcers will be back in action for another three game weekend series at First Arena next week as the Danville Dashers come to town! Get your tickets now by calling 607-734-PUCK!
