OKC Energy FC News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - Energy FC's Major League Soccer (MLS) affiliate Sporting Kansas City today announced their intention to field a team in the USL for the 2016 season, bringing their affiliation with Energy FC to an end.
"The ownership, management and technical staff of Sporting KC was a partner on and off the field during our affiliation," said Energy FC co-owner Bob Funk Jr. "In addition to providing an outlet for our athletes to prove their ability on the field, their ownership group was instrumental in our team interviewing and hiring our head coach Jimmy Nielsen."
"Specific thanks to Robb Heineman and Greg Cotton for their wisdom, guidance and true partnership during our tenure as their affiliate. The experience they've shared has assisted our staff to lay the foundation for success in our city. As one of the best-operated franchises in MLS, Sporting KC can serve as a model for us to emulate in our quest to bring an MLS team to Oklahoma City. We look forward to continuing a lasting friendship with Sporting KC as well as competing and winning matches against their USL squad next season."
Energy FC is currently in negotiations with other MLS clubs to fill the role as affiliate for the 2016 season and beyond.
