Emond Named Oakley/CHL Goaltender of the Week
December 29, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs, in conjunction with the Central Hockey League, announced today that goaltender Marco Emond has been named the Oakley/CHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending December 28. Emond becomes the first Sundogs player this season to receive weekly honors.
In two contests against the Rapid City Rush this past weekend, Emond turned aside 62 of 63 shots faced for a .984 save percentage, helping his club match a season-best two-game winning streak.
The Valleyfield, Quebec, native recorded his and his club's first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over the expansion Rush on Friday, Dec. 26, turning aside all 29 shots faced including 20 in the third period. Emond and his club held Rapid City scoreless on nine power play opportunities in the game, including 1:49 of 5-on-3 time in the final frame.
Emond followed up Friday night's outing with a 33-save performance on Saturday in the Sundogs' 2-1 win over the league's newest franchise. The veteran netminder's more than 100-minute shutout streak came to an end after the Rush tallied a power play goal with less than six minutes to play in regulation.
With Emond's strong play in net, Arizona sits just one point back of Rio Grande Valley for fourth place overall and holds a two-point cushion over Corpus Christi for the Southern Conference's fifth and final playoff spot.
Emond is 9-9-1 on the year and currently ranks second in the CHL in both saves (583) and games played (20). His 1181:53 minutes rank third and his nine wins are tied for sixth-best in the league.
Arizona is currently riding a two-game win streak and will take on the New Mexico Scorpions on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Tim's Toyota Center in the franchise's third annual New Year's Eve game. Game time is set for 7:35pm (Arizona time).
