Emanuel Stings Trappers on Fireworks Night

July 1, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

Right-hander Brandon Emanuel (6-6) tossed 7.0 shutout innings, allowing only five hits and two walks, while striking out three to lead the Salt Lake Stingers to an 8-0 rout of the Edmonton Trappers Monday night at TELUS Field. It was the second straight win for Emanuel, who had lost two starts in a row before beating the Las Vegas 51s in this last outing on June 24. Left fielder Gary Johnson also had a huge game for the Stingers, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. The Trappers were shutout by Salt Lake only one day after blanking the Tacoma Rainiers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. It was the third time the club has been shutout this season and the second time at TELUS Field. The game was the first meeting between the two clubs that met in the 2002 Pacific Coast League Final with the Trappers coming away with the Championship. The loss drops the Trappers record against their North Division opponents to 8-5. Edmonton and Salt Lake continue this interdivisional battle on Tuesday afternoon at TELUS Field.

Trappers' starter Britt Reames (3-9) retired six of the first seven batters that he faced, allowing only a double down the left field line by Gary Johnson with one out in the second. With one out in the third inning Reames walked Salt Lake center fielder Julio Ramirez, a rare occurrence for Ramirez, who had only four walks in 55 games entering Monday's contest. He advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single to center field by ex-Trapper Trent Durrington. The Trappers had their chances in the early going, but were unable to plate a run off Emanuel. Peter Bergeron led off the first inning with an infield hit and moved to second base on a ground out, but could not advance any further. Terrmel Sledge grounded out to end the third inning after Anthony Medrano and Luis Figueroa had singled to put runners at first and second and Luis Ortiz led off the fourth with a walk, but failed to advance. The Stingers took a two run lead in the sixth inning with the aid of another walk. Designated hitter Adam Riggs drew a free pass with one out in the frame and scored when the next batter, Johnson, doubled to the gap in left-center field.

Edmonton came close to cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the frame when Ortiz was hit by a pitch and Valentino Pascucci followed with a double down the right field line. Ortiz tried to score all the way from first on the play, but was tossed out at home by right fielder Jeff Guiel. Salt Lake put the game away with a three-run seventh inning off reliever Jose Colon. Wil Nieves doubled to straightaway center field to open the inning and scored on a one-out single to right field by leadoff man Alfredo Amezaga. Durrington followed with a two-run homer that ricocheted off the light tower in left field. The longball by the second baseman was his fifth of the season. The Trappers squandered another scoring chance in the eighth inning when Peter Bergeron and Luis Figueroa led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Sledge worked the count full against reliever Rich Rodriguez, but then grounded out to first, advancing both runners. Ortiz lined a Rodriguez pitch into center field only to have Ramirez make a great running catch, forcing the runners to hold. Pascucci then grounded out to first to end the Trappers last hope at breaking up the shutout. Salt Lake capped the scoring with three runs in the top of the ninth inning, which included a two-run triple by Johnson.
