Elmira Pioneers News Release
Thursday, August 1, 2002 - Heritage Park, Colonie, NY
The Pioneers hung on to take the rubber match of their 3-game series in a 3-2 final Thursday night at Heritage Park in front of 1609 fans. The games started 31 minutes belatedly due to rain and wasalso delayed for 15 minutes in the middle of the 3rd inning.
Jeff Andra (7-5) was brilliant in 8 innings of 4-hit shutout ball for the victory. Andra walked 3 while striking out 7 and threw hitless baseball in his final 3+ frames.
Julio Perez allowed a pair of unearned runs in the 9th on a Carlos Sepulveda double. Perez had his shutout streak end at 23 innings but maintains a perfect ERA of 0.00 through 24 ip this season as he recorded his 15th save in as many tries, 2nd most in the league.
Cesar King led the offense driving in a pair of runs and scoring the other as he went 2-for-3 with a double and Sac-fly. He also gunned down a runner attempting to steal, his 2nd in as many nights.
Elmira (12-7 / 37-27) pulled to within 4 games of 1st place New Jersey who had the day off today. Elmira travels to Yogi Berra Stadium for a 3-game series this weekend against the 1st place Jackals who have won 8 straight as well as 16 of their most recent 17 contests.
The Pioneers scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning beginning with a 1-out walk by Brian Jones. Cesar King doubled to right-center bringing in Jones all the way from 1st. After the play, pitcher Brian Morse was ejected by HP umpire Shaun Francis for possibly arguing balls and strikes while he was covering behind home-plate for the throw. Manager Mike Marshall also was tossed for protesting the ejection of his pitcher.
Newcomer Jeremy Brostrom hit a roller to 1B Vic Davila but the throw to the new pitcher Trevor Marcotte covering at 1st bounced in and out of his glove for an E1 allowing King to race around from 2nd base giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Elmira scored their last run in the 6th inning when Rafael Alvarez led off with a walk and moved to 2nd on a Pedro Quero single to LF. Osmani Garcia bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd and Brian Jones was intentionally walked. Derrick DePriest replaced Trevor Marcotte and Cesar King hit a Sag-Fly just deep enough to LF to Alvarez to score barely ahead of the throw of former Pioneer Terrell Merriman.
Julio Perez had his shutout string broken in the 9th inning on a pair of Albany-Colonie unearned runs. Vic Davila reached with 1-out on a throwing error by SS Ron Bush. Steven Truitt singled to LF. Dan Singletary flied out to CF and Davila tagged up and advanced to 3rd. Pinch-hitter Carlos Sepulveda doubled to deep RF over the head of Brostrom to bring home both runners. If Bush had not committed the throwing error the inning would have been over before the double was hit thus both runs are unearned and do not effect Perez's perfect ERA however they do end his season-long shutout streak at 23 innings.
Terrell Merriman hit a solid line-drive to CF but Brandon Pernell was there to catch it for the final out of the ball-game.
LH Sean Brummett (6-3, 2.43) starts for the Pioneers Friday night at New Jersey. The Sunday game is expected to feature the 3rd Greg Keagle vs. Joel Bennett matchup of the season. Bennett has taken both contests from Keagle and leads the league with an 11-1 mark. The Pioneers dropped 3 out of 4 games at New Jersey in mid-June. After the New Jersey series is the 3-day Northern League All-Star Break with the All-Star game taking place Tuesday night at Quebec City. Sean Brummett and Julio Perez will represent the Pioneers on the East Division All-Stars.
Elmira returns to Dunn Field next Thursday (August 8) to open a 6-game homestand vs. Allentown and Quebec.
