Elks Sweep AppleSox 8-4

July 17, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks for the third consecutive night fell behind early in the game, but were able to rally back as they had eleven hits and capped their scoring with a big Grand Slam in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of Stetson Olson, and the Elks were able to beat the Wenatchee AppleSox by a score of 8-4, embarking some revenge on the team that defeated the Elks in 2010 for the league title. The eight runs would be more enough for Kurt Jahnke, who threw 7 quality innings in picking up the win for the Elks.

The AppleSox got on the board first for the third consecutive night as Ryan Barnes had a one out single, Adam Nelubowich walked, Brock Gates singled to left field on a ball that was misplayed by the left fielder Tevlin, letting Barnes come around to score. The next hitter, Pat Valaika, hit a deep Sacrifice Fly into centerfield to bring home the second run, giving Wenatchee an early 2-0 lead. The Elks answered back in the bottom of the second as Stetson Olson reached on an error with one out, stole second base, then came around to score on an RBI single by Ryan Dunn to make the score 2-1.

In the fifth, the AppleSox got one after Eric Filia-Snyder got a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Payden Cawley Lamb to increase the lead to 3-1. Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Elks led off the bottom of the inning with four consecutive singles, and the fourth comes from Michael Tevlin to plate the first run of the inning. After a foul pop out, Cullen Hendrickson also delivered an RBI single to tie the game at three. That was followed in the bottom of the sixth inning where Ryan Dunn delivered a two out RBI double to score Bo Walter to give the Elks the lead 4-3.

That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh, when Michael Tevlin led off the inning with a double, Donald Collins walked, Cullen Hendrickson's failed sac put runners on first and second with one out, Michael Benjamin singled, then after a pop out from Bo Walter, Stetson Olson hit a full count fastball over the right field wall in front of the Bend Elks score board to give the Elks an 8-3 lead. Wenatchee would get a solo home run to lead off the 9th inning to make it 8-4, but would get no closer as the Elks swept the defending league champs.
