Elks Lose to Walla Walla 5-1

June 29, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

For the second time in three games, the Bend Elks manage to put plate one run on four hits, but this time it would not be enough as the Walla Walla Sweets pushed three runs across in the bottom of the 7th inning en route to beating the Bend Elks 5-1.

The Sweets took the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning after an RBI double from Ryan Cooper scored Kalani Brackenridge off of Elks reliever Michael Diniglian (0-1) to get the scoring going. The Sweets would add another one in the 6th after an RBI single from Ben Ruff scored Sweets third baseman Shane Ziele, who had a fantastic series against the Elks, to give them a 2-0 lead.

The Elks pushed their only run across in the top of the 7th inning as Darian Rmaage came across to score on a pinch hit RBI single from Grant Newton into right field, but the play seemed to ruin the Elks mentality as well as Steven Halcomb, who was at second base when the ball was hit, was thrown out at the plate by Sweets right fielder Spencer O'Neil in a very controversial call that coach Joe Dominiak spent an extended period of time arguing, but to no avail.

The Elks struggled to do anything against Walla Walla starter Tyler Roberts, who got his first win of the season for the Sweets. Roberts had a perfect game through five innings that was finally broken up by Parker Guinn to lead off the top of the 6th. Roberts would end up pitching 7 innings, surrendering just one run on three hits while striking out five.

The Elks begin a long homestand against the Cowlitz Black Bears Friday on Silipint night at Vince Genna Stadium, presented by Smolich Motors. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will be presented a free silipint with the Bend Elks and the Smolich logo on it. First pitch at 6:35.
