Black Bears Win 9-3 at Bend
June 29, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Bend: Taking advantage of a series of Bend Elks errors, the Cowlitz Black Bears scored seven runs in the final two innings to pull away and win 9-3 Friday night. With the win, the Black Bears are now just a half game behind Bend for the final playoff spot in the WCL's West division.
Austin Diemer (Cal State Fullerton) scored each of the Black Bears first two runs after leading off each inning with a double. Diemer finished with three hits, as did Ben Swinford (Cornell). A pivotal defensive play was made by Nick Paxton (Mt. Hood) when he threw a runner out at the plate in the fourth inning.
Leko Galusha (Lower Columbia) was excellent all night for the Black Bears, allowing only two runs, both of them unearned, in six and two thirds innings. The offensive breakout came after Galusha left the game, allowing Taylor Williams (Mt. Hood) to get the win after throwing one and a third scoreless innings.
Swinford had the only base hit in the Black Bears four-run eighth inning; three of the runs were unearned. Brian Frattali (Portland) had a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Tyler Madrid (Santa Ana) added a two-run double.
The Black Bears next appear at home this Sunday for a doubleheader against Bellingham that begins at 5:05 PM. It will be Best Care-Local Care Presents Kids Club and Senior Sundays. There will be a $2 discount for all seniors. Kids Club members get in for free and all kids get to run the bases after the game.
