WCL Bend Elks

Elks Fall to Cowlitz 6-29-12

June 29, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Bend Elks tied the game in the bottom of the 7th inning after Steven Halcomb delivered an RBI double to score Logan Frandsen, but the Cowlitz Black Bears plate four runs in the eighth and 3 runs in the 9th to run away with the game at Vince Genna Stadium on Friday night, winning by a final total 9-3.

The Bend Elks got a quality start out of their starter, the right handed pitcher from Arizona State Darin Gillies, who received a no-decision in the Elks loss. Gillies went 7 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out seven. It was the bullpen that would let the Elks down, as 4 pitchers combined in the 8th and the 9th inning to surrender 7 runs in two innings, though they do not shoulder all of the blame as two errors in the 8th helped key the Cowlitz rally.

Will Sparks from the University of Washington went 3-4 in the game, and Shawn O'Brien added a couple of hits for the Elks, who fall to 9-12 overall in the West Coast League.

The Elks and Black Bears will play the second game of their two game series Saturday, first pitch at 6:35.
