June 6, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
The Bend Elks scored 4 runs in the top of the first inning, and then overcame a costly late error in order to secure their first win of young 2011 season, beating the Gems 6-5 Sunday evening.
The Bend Elks got off to a hot start as Derek Blankenship led off the game by getting on base as a result of an error by the Gems first baseman. After an Elks walk, Bo Walter hit a 2 run double to score both runners on base. After another walk, Taylor Noyer hit a 2 run single to chase Klamath starter Cody Edwards, who would last only 1/3 of an inning and take the loss. The Elks would add a run in the second after Blankenship singled and stole second, advanced to 3rd on a groundout, and scored on a Tyler Christian Sac Fly to put the Elks up 5-0.
Klamath came back to score 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth after a single and a walk put two runners on base, and Graham Saiko hit a 2 run double to cut the deficit 5-2. The Elks and Gems would each score one in the 8th inning as Jacob Goulder would walk and eventually score on an RBI single by Kyle Mauch. The Gems matched the 1 run in the 8th after a triple from Kainoa Crowell was plated by a Sac Fly from Zack Earle.
In the 9th inning, the Gems got a single from Saiko, and after another hit, a wild pickoff throw from catcher Taylor Noyer would allow both runners to score, cutting the lead to 6-5, where the Elks would hold on as Daniel Grazzini managed to record the final three outs for the save. Daniel Chavez started and gets the win for the Elks after pitching 5 innings, allowing two runs on 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out three.
The Elks are off until Friday, where they will have their home opener against the Corvallis Knights, first pitch at 6:35. For those unable to attend the game, all Elks home games will be broadcast on 106.7 KPOV in Bend or online at KPOV.org.
