June 11, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
Steven Halcomb stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning Sunday night at Vince Genna Stadium, and sent a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a solo homerun to break a 3-3 tie, sending Elks fans home happy with a 4-3 victory.
The Bend Elks (5-2) had the lead early as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second courtesy of a 2 run single from University of Washington catcher Parker Guinn. That lead was extended to 3-0 in the bottom of the third after Bo Walter hit a two out triple and came around to score courtesy of a passed ball by Sweets catcher Kevin Hawk.
That would be the score for the next few innings as Clay Bauer from the College of San Mateo had a quality outing for the Elks Sunday night. Though he would not record the win, he pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, giving up just one run on two hits while walking four and striking out two. He was replaced by lefty Austin Guzzon who got the last out in the 6th inning, but would struggle to begin the 7th, as we walked the Sweets Jarrod Turner to lead off the 7th before being replaced by Gonzaga reliever Derek Peterson. The Sweets would end up scoring two runs in the 7th inning as both turner and pinch hitter Chance Copacz would come around to score and tie the game at three.
That all changed when Steven Halcomb led off the bottom of the 8th against Sweets reliever Garrett Tygerson (0-2) and knocked that pitch over the wall to break the 3-3 tie. Trevor HIldenberger came on for the top of the 9th and pitched a scoreless inning for the save.
The Elks have been without head coach Sean Kinney, who has been under the weather the last few days, and there is no timetable set for his return.
The Elks return to action Monday for game 2 of the 3 game series against the Walla Walla Sweets, first pitch HAS BEEN CHANGED to 12:30 p.m.
