June 11, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
In a game that saw little offense and excellent starting pitching from starters Nick Stiltner and Max Beatty, it was the late game heroics of Brandon Snyder that would give the Bend Elks the victory, taking game one of the three game series by a score of 3-2 against the Corvallis Knights.
The Elks got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when Kyle Buchanan led off the inning with a walk, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, then scored on a Jacob Goulder RBI single into center field. The Knights countered with a run in the top of the 6th when Alex Foulon singled, Kramer Scott reached on an error by Derek Blankenship, and Foulon scored on a groundout by Griffin Boyd. The Elks retook the lead 2-1 in the 6th after Shawn O'Brien led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a groundball by Loren Gardner-Young, then scored on a wild pitch by Max Beatty, and that would be the end of Beatty's night as well. No runs would score again until the top of the 8th when Nate King led off the inning by walking Matt Nylen, who then advanced to second on a groundout by Alex Foulon. Nylen then scored on an RBI single into center field by Griffin Boyd, tying the game at 2.
No runs would be scored again until the bottom of the 12th inning, when Bo Walter led off the inning with a single. Jason Wilson was inserted as a pinch runner, who got to third after back to back walks issued to Loren Gardner-Young and Cameron Newell loaded the bases for Brandon Snyder, who finally delivered a game-winning hit for the Elks, lining a pitch off of Justin Hepner into centerfield to send the Elks and Elks fans home happy.
The Elks were led on the mound by Nick Stiltner, who threw 7 terrific innings for the Elks, giving up just 1 unearned run on 2 hits, walking and striking out two. Nate King ran into trouble, giving up 1 run in 2/3 of an inning, but then Stephen Ostapeck relieved him and threw a brilliant 3 and 1/3 innings, giving up just 1 hit in his effort. The winning pitcher for the game was Daniel Grazzini, who pitched a scoreless 12th inning for the win.
At the plate for the Elks, Bo Walter was the only Elk to have a multi-hit game for the Elks, going 2-6 on the night. Shaun O'Brien went 1-3 with a single and a run scored, Jacob Goulder went 1-5 with an RBI, and Brandon Snyder had the other hit for the Elks, the game winning single in the bottom of the 12th.
The series will resume tomorrow, 1st pitch scheduled for 6:35.
