Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso, June 10, 2011: After a road trip in which the Cowlitz Black Bears collected 32 total hits but only tallied 6 runs, the team returned home for a six game homestand against the Walla Walla Sweets and the Wenatchee AppleSox. Ian Ekery (University of Missouri) took the mound for Cowlitz, to be opposed by Sean Santchi for Walla Walla.
The Black Bears struck in the first, when Derek Atkinson (Clackamas CC) reached on a fielding error, stole 3rd, and then came home on an error by the pitcher. The big damage came in the 2nd inning, which saw 11 Black Bears come to the plate and tally three hits to go with five walks.
Ekery went six innings, gave up one run (unearned), struck out five and walked one. At the plate, Braxton Miller (Lewis-Clark State) had the most productive day, going one-for-two with a triple and three walks as the designated hitter. Catching in his place was Cody Webster (Cal St. Fullerton), who made an effort to increase his .111 batting average by collecting two singles in three appearances in addition to a walk.
Game two of the three game series is tomorrow at 6:35. It will be Applebee's Saturday at the Park, with Applebee's gift certificates given away all night long. Plus, it's the Widmer Brothers pint glass giveaway night where the first 100 adults will receive a free pint glass thanks to the good folks at Widmer Brothers.
