Elks 3 Game Winning Streak snapped by Cowlitz Black Bears
July 31, 2013 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
The Bend Elks committed 5 errors against the Cowlitz Black Bears on Tuesday night in front of the largest home crowd in the year, and dug themselves too large of a hole, falling to the Black Bears 6-2 at Vince Genna Stadium, and had their 3 game winning streak snapped.
Cowlitz (21-22) took an early 1-0 lead on Elks starter Clay Gartner (4-2) in the top of the 1st inning as Ryan Aguilar singled to open up the game, and came around to score on an RBI from Devyn Bolasky, a groundball mishandled by Keach Ballard, to put the Black Bears on the board first.
It was a back and forth game in the early going as the Elks (26-17) would tie it up in the bottom of the 2nd on an RBI groundout from Grant Newton to score Derek Dixon. Bend followed with a run in the bottom of the 3rd as Tyler Servais came through with a sacrifice fly to score Zach Close with the bases loaded, and the Elks had the 2-1 lead through 3 innings.
The score held there until the top of the 5th inning as Cowlitz used 2 singles and 3 walks to their advantage, scoring 2 runs off of 3 Elks pitchers in the inning, and capturing a 1 run lead they would never relinquish.
The Black Bears added 3 more runs in the top of the 7th inning as Elks reliever Cam Booser had 2 throwing errors in the top of the 7th and Derrick Salberg had an RBI single, giving the Black Bears the 6-2 final, snapping their 3 game losing streak with the win.
The Elks and Black Bears will be back in action Wednesday on AirLink EMS night at the ballpark, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
