El Paso Locomotive FC News Release
EL PASO, Texas - El Paso Locomotive FC announced today that it has signed defender Guillermo "Memo" Diaz for the 2025 season, marking the defender's second stint with the Locos. The signing is pending league and federation approval, and the terms of the deal will not be disclosed per club policy.
"I'm very excited to be back with my hometown team and I can't wait to get started," Diaz said. "I hope to make an impact on and off the field and we need to believe - and make the city believe - that we can turn this club back to winning ways."
Diaz, a Borderland native who was raised in Anthony, New Mexico, returns to El Paso after a four-year stint with Oakland Roots SC. With the Roots, Diaz established himself as one the club's most historic players with a club-leading 116 USL Championship appearances and 15 assists, scoring five (5) goals along the way.
"We're very pleased with adding a player like Memo to the group who has continually improved throughout the course of his career which is a testament to his mentality and overall technical quality," Locomotive Technical Director Ray Saari said. "Over the past two years, he has been one of the top point-producing wingbacks in the USL Championship & we're excited to see what he can add to our attack for 2025."
Before his professional career, Diaz played for Laredo Heat in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) in 2018. Diaz scored five (5) goals for the Heat in a season that saw them make a run to the NPSL Regional Semifinals, win the Lone Star Conference and go undefeated in the regular season (10-0-0).
Diaz played collegiate soccer at Yavapai Junior College in Prescott, Arizona between 2014-15. With the Roughriders, Diaz earned selection to the NSCAA and NJCAA All-Region teams and led the Yavapai to a top five national finish in 2015. He then transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, recording four (4) goals and five (5) assists in 42 games for the Rebels.
Diaz is a graduate of Gadsden High School, where he was named the 2013-14 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year, and finished his high school career with 68 goals and 73 assists.
Diaz is the third El Paso native the club announced this week, followed by 20-year-old forward Omar Mora and the club's youngest ever signing in 15-year-old defender Kenneth Hoban.
