St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge dropped their second game in a row on Thursday night to the London Lightning by a score of 121-103 at Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario.
It was a quick start for a surging London Lightning team in this one as they got out to a 12-0 lead to begin the game. After the Edge got on the board they started to pick up the pace, but the London shooters were on fire hitting almost every shot they took as they came down the floor. As the game moved on to the second quarter of action London would be in control by a score of 33-13.
Into the second the Edge would go with a different look on the floor as Obie Oleka and Jared Nickens would be inserted into the lineup to begin the quarter. Halfway through the second quarter the Edge would go on a little 8-0 run capped off by a couple of Glen 'Big Baby' Davis free throws. As the quarter wore on, a couple of three-pointers from Diego Kapelan and Dez Lee would breathe some life into the Edge, but they would still trail London by a score of 65-40 with just one half of basketball to play.
Coming out of the break, the Edge would go with Jarryn Skeete controlling the offence at the point guard position. He would spark the offence right away getting to the hoop and converting on his free throws after a foul. With every Edge basket came a London answer as the Lightning would build on their lead well into the third quarter of play. The quarter would be capped off for the Edge by a Jared Nickens three to again try and breathe some life into the Edge as they went into the fourth quarter with a big hill to climb, down 97-69.
Head Coach Doug Plumb would go with an entirely different looking 5 to start the fourth quarter as Satnam Singh, Obie Oleka, Jarryn Skeete, and Jared Nickens would join Dez Lee. Singh would score the first 3 Edge points in the quarter, converting on 3 of 4 free throw attempts. However, the story of the night was the high-powered London offence who were relentless. A few successful trips down the floor for the Edge would be answered by London's big men inside and then outside on the perimeter by their guards. The bench would do all they could down the stretch, with Jared Nickens and Obie Oleka leading the offensive push, but it was all for not as London would keep building their lead and finding an answer for every Edge bucket on the night. Once the dust settled London would walk away with this one by a score of 121-103.
On this night, the Edge offence was spread across the board with Obie Oleka being the offensive leader with 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to record another double-double. Right behind Oleka were Jared Nickens and Isaiah Tate II who dropped 11 points each off the bench for the Edge. Overall the team would shoot 41% from the field and just 25% from beyond the three-point line in this one.
For London, they were led by Mo Bolden who dropped a game-high 25 points in the victory. London would also shoot 48.6% from the three-point line with 17 made threes in the game.
The St. John's Edge will now look to regroup after the loss and have a day for travel as they head to Kitchener-Waterloo on Saturday to face the Titans in the two teams first match-up on the year. You can catch the action on www.nblclive.ca.
Upon the conclusion of this 5-game road trip the Edge are back at Mile One Centre on March 3rd and 4th to lock horns with the Cape Breton Highlanders. You can pick your tickets up at the Mile One Centre box office, by calling 576-7657, or online at www.sjedge.ca.
