Deacon Sports and Entertainment Issues Statement on New Professional Basketball Team

July 15, 2021 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
St. John's Edge News Release

St. John's, Newfoundland - Deacon Sports and Entertainment is surprised to learn that the City of St. John's and St. John's Sports and Entertainment Ltd. has announced that a tentative deal has been reached with 2001 Investments Limited to bring a new professional basketball team to Mile One Centre this fall.

Deacon Sports and Entertainment, in conjunction with the St. John's Edge recently submitted a proposal to St. John's Sports and Entertainment that saw Deacon Sports and Entertainment assume the franchise rights to the Edge, which would have allowed the basketball club to continue to play in the National Basketball League of Canada. Further, this proposal settled the parties' outstanding matters, including a resolution to debts owing on the recently installed 360 LED Board located inside of Mile One Centre.

Deacon Sports and Entertainment currently operates three ECHL franchises in Newfoundland, Quebec, and Iowa and is proudly affiliated with Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment as well as the Montreal Canadiens, and Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League. Through our charitable arm, Growlers Give, we have donated nearly $500,000 directly back into the community via a number of meaningful partnerships with a number of community groups such as the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Single Parents Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Association for New Canadians, City of St. John's R.E.A.L Program and the Gathering Place. We are committed to delivering the highest level of entertainment, quality, and professionalism that the citizens of St. John's and the surrounding area have come to expect.
