St. John's Edge News Release
St. John's, NL - The St. John's Edge were 0-3 against Halifax coming into this one, where they were looking to rebound after a loss at home. Through all 4 quarters the Edge held their ground defensively and had their shots falling on route to a 103-95 win in front of 4,200 fans at Mile One Centre.
Coming into this one the Edge were looking to get back to their winning ways, having dropped their last two contests. This game was also meaningful as they looked to finally defeat the Hurricanes this season.
From the start, those in attendance could tell that it was a different mentality then the last game, every player looked locked in and it showed on the court. Strong defense and the ability to create open looks got them out to an early lead, but as the quarter wore on Halifax played catch up and took a 28-25 lead into the second quarter of action.
The second quarter was all St. John's Edge, the team looked to catapult themselves into the driver's seat. A Glen 'Big Baby' Davis layup at the 5:05 mark of the quarter would give the Edge the lead and they would not look back. In the second quarter alone Glen Davis dropped 13 points and Dez Lee followed suit with 10 points of his own. Consistency on the defensive end and holding the Halifax scorers at bay would help the Edge go into the break with a 59-43 lead.
Coming out of the half-time break, the Hurricanes started to pick it up offensively and reduce the Edge lead to single digits. Junior Cadougan took the wheel in this quarter for the Edge, the Toronto, ON native scored 8 points and was relentless when driving to the hoop. A trio of late free throws would bring the game to within 9 points with just one quarter remaining.
Into the final 12 minutes the Edge were looking for that spark to close out a tough Halifax squad. With some key big men in foul trouble for the Hurricanes, the Edge took full advantage and continued to pound the ball into the paint to pick up points around the rim. With the game coming to a close, Halifax would be within a couple of possessions, but the Edge were able to prevail with the 103-95 win and finish up their homestand with a 2-2 record.
On the night the Edge offense was led by Glen 'Big Baby' Davis who went off on the Halifax defense for 30 points, one shy of his season high. Right behind Big Baby were Dez Lee and Junior Cadougan who put up 23 and 22 points in the win. The Edge also got a great game out of reigning NBLC MVP Carl English who was 4-for-6 from three-point range and would total 18 points on the night.
For the Hurricanes, they were led by Jordan Washington who scored 19 points in the loss.
The St. John's Edge now hit the road for a block of games in the Maritimes, starting with a trip to Cape Breton on February 4th. After the road trip the Edge are back in St. John's for a pair of games with the Windsor Express on February 15th and 17th.
