
Eastern League Weekly Award Winners Announced

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of April 14th through April 20th:
Bowie Baysox first baseman Christian Walker has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 14th-April 20th. The 23-year old hit .421 (8-for-19) with one triple, two home runs, six RBIs, five runs scored, one walk and a .842 slugging percentage in five games for the Baysox last week. Christian, who is a native of Limerick, Pennsylvania, had at least one hit and scored one run in all five games he played in last week. He had multiple hits in three of those games and drove in multiple runs twice, including going 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in a 7-6 loss against Akron on Friday night at Prince George's Stadium. The 6'0", 220 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in RBI (6) and total bases (16) last week. He also finished tied for the league lead in triples (1), and home runs (2), ranked second in slugging percentage (.842) and OPS (1.292), and tied for second in runs scored (5), hits (8) and extra-base hits (3). Walker, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the 15th best prospect in the Orioles system, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the fourth round of the 2012 draft after hitting .321 with 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and 48 runs scored in 67 games during his junior season at the University of South Carolina.
Bryan Mitchell, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Trenton Thunder, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 14th-April 20th. The 6'3", 205 lb. hurler started one game for the Thunder last week and had a record of 1-0 with 12 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Bryan, who is a native of Reidsville, North Carolina, made his lone start of the week last Monday night at Akron and threw six shutout innings in Trenton's 2-0 victory over the Aeros. Mitchell, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the 14th best prospect in the Yankees organization, scattered four singles and walked two batters while striking out a career-high 12 batters against Akron. Bryan was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday and promoted to the New York Yankees on Sunday. He was sent back to Trenton this morning without making an appearance with the Yankees. The 23-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (12) last week and tied for first in wins (1) and ERA (0.00). Bryan, who started three games in his Double-A debut with Trenton last season and posted 1.93 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 18.2 innings of work, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the 2009 draft out of Rockingham County High School in Reidsville, North Carolina.
