
Eastern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of June 11th through June 17th:
Trenton Thunder right fielder Zoilo Almonte has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of June 11th-June 17th. The 6'0", 205 lb. switch hitter batted .455 (10-for-22) with two doubles, one home run, 10 RBI, five runs scored, four stolen bases, two walks and a .682 slugging percentage in six games for the Thunder last week. Almonte, who is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, kicked off his week by combining to go 4-for-6 with a double, three RBI and one run scored in a doubleheader sweep at Altoona on Wednesday night. He went on to record two more multiple hit games during the week and drove in or scored at least one run in all six of the games he played in last week. The 23-year old drove in a league-high 10 runs last week and also finished among the weekly league leaders in batting average (.455-2nd), hits (10-tied 2nd), steals (4-tied 2nd), total bases (15-tied 4th), slugging percentage (.682-tied 6th), extra-base hits (3-tied 6th), OPS (1.182-7th), on-base percentage (.500-tied 7th), runs scored (5-tied 7th) and doubles (2-tied 7th). Zoilo, who currently has an eight-game hitting streak and has collected at least one hit in 19 of the past 20 games he has started, was signed by the New York Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2005.

Zach Clark, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Bowie Baysox, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 11th-June 17th. The 28-year old started one game for the Baysox last week and had a record of 1-0 with seven strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Clark, who is a native of Wilmington, Delaware, made his only appearance of the week against the visiting Portland Sea Dogs on Wednesday night and earned the win in Bowie's 7-0 victory. He struck out seven batters and walked four and surrendered only a pair of singles while improving his record to 4-4 on the season and lowering his ERA to 3.01. The 6'0", 185 lb. hurler tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00) last week and also ranked among the weekly league leaders in batting average against (.087-3rd), wins (1-tied 3rd), strikeouts (7-tied 9th) and innings pitched (7.0-tied 10th). Zach, who also made a pair of starts for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides earlier this season and had a record of 2-0 with a 2.38 ERA, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a non-drafted free agent after posting a record of 1-6 with 53 strikeouts and a 3.86 ERA over 53.2 innings of work in 12 appearances during his senior season at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in 2006.
