Eastern Conference Round-Up: June 2
June 2, 2014 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
1. New England Revolution- 23 pts.|2-0 loss at Montreal Impact; Week 14: vs. New York Red Bulls
Although New England had its five-match winning streak snapped with a road loss to Montreal Impact, it still held onto first place in the Conference. The Revolution also failed to score for the first time in seven matches in the test against Montreal after going five contests with at least two goals.
2. D.C. United - 21 pts. |1-0 win vs. Sporting Kansas City; Week 14: vs. Columbus Crew
The week's biggest beneficiary, D.C. United defended RFK Stadium en route to a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City, vaulting into second place. Fabian Espindola scored yet again for the Black-and-Red, which next plays Columbus in another intra-conference clash.
3. Sporting Kansas City - 19 pts.| 1-1 draw vs. New York Red Bulls, 1-0 loss at D.C. United; Week 14: at Houston Dynamo
Possibly MLS' most shorthanded team at the moment, Sporting Kansas City dropped to third by virtue of its defeat at D.C. United after earning a draw with the Red Bulls in a midweek match.
4. Houston Dynamo - 17 pts.| 3-0 loss at Colorado Rapids; Week 14: vs. Sporting Kansas City
Houston continued its offensive struggle in being held scoreless for the third consecutive match, this time at Colorado. Despite its slump, the Dynamo continues to hold in playoff position, which should serve it well when Brad Davis and Boniek Garcia return.
5. Toronto FC - 16 pts.| 3-2 win vs. Columbus Crew; Week 14: vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Toronto FC has played just 10 matches in 2014 (no one else in the Conference has fewer than 12), and its 1.6 points-per-game ranks third in the East. The games in hand are an advantage for the Reds when Michael Bradley returns following the FIFA World Cup.
6. Columbus Crew- 16 pts.|3-2 loss at Toronto FC; Week 14: vs. Real Salt Lake, at D.C. United
The Crew was disappointed with its result on Saturday, but its midfield depth really shown through in Toronto. That depth might continue to be counted on with another double-match week, starting with RSL at home on Wednesday.
7. New York Red Bulls- 15 pts. |1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City; Week 14: at New England Revolution
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored again in Kansas City and now leads MLS in goals scored excluding penalties, with eight.
8. Philadelphia Union - 14 pts.|3-0 win at Chivas USA; Week 14: vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC
The Union stayed on the West Coast all week after its match against LA Galaxy and were able to achieve a statement 3-0 win over Chivas USA. The win moved Philadelphia to just two points out of a playoff spot.
9. Chicago Fire - 13 pts. |1-1 draw vs. LA Galaxy; Week 14: at Colorado Rapids, vs. Seattle Sounders FC
Chicago earned a point at home against LA Galaxy even without Mike Magee, who missed his second consecutive match for the club. A large, double-match week looms for the Fire.
10. Montreal Impact - 10 pts.| 2-0 win vs. New England Revolution; Week 14: bye
The Impact got a sorely-needed win over first-placed New England. Acquiring Futty Danso from Portland should also help Montreal shore up its defense.
