San Jose Earthquakes News Release


SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes hosted two matches at PayPal Park last week, playing a 1-1 draw against Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, after defeating the Portland Timbers 3-2 on Wednesday. The Quakes extended their unbeaten streak to four matches (2-0-2), tied for the second longest active streak in MLS. San Jose also extended their unbeaten streak at PayPal Park to seven regular season matches (3-0-4) and eight matches in all competitions (4-0-4).

The Earthquakes are now scheduled to play a pair of road matches this week, first facing Sacramento Republic FC in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 25, before returning to MLS action to play LAFC on Saturday, May 28.

Wednesday's match will kick off from Heart Health Park at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Saturday's game is slated for 3 p.m. PT at Banc of California Stadium and will be broadcast nationally on UniMás and TUDN and aired via radio on KNBR 1050 (English), and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

Snapping the Streak

Wednesday's victory marked San Jose's first win over Portland since April 6, 2019, snapping a seven-match winless streak in the series (0-5-2).

Player of the Week

Midfielder Jamiro Monteiro scored two goals against Portland on Wednesday, tallying three goals in two games and marking the first multi-goal game of his MLS career. He was later voted as the MLS Player of the Week for Week 12.

Helping Hands

Forwards Cade Cowell and Jeremy Ebobisse each tallied an assist on Wednesday.

Welcome Back

Midfielders Judson and Shea Salinas were active for the first time this season after being sidelined due to knee and leg injuries, respectively.

Captaining and Scoring

Midfielder Jackson Yueill scored his third goal of the season and 10th of his MLS career. With the goal, Yueill matched his single-season career-high in goals (2019, 2021). He has also now scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his MLS career.

Helping the Cause

Defender Francisco Calvo and midfielder Jamiro Monteiro each tallied an assist on Yueill's goal.

MLS Debut

Rookie defender Oskar Ågren made his MLS debut, starting and playing 90 minutes.

100 MLS Appearances

Midfielder Eric Remedi made his 100th MLS appearance, starting and playing 80 minutes.

Regreso Mexicano

Midfielder Chofis made his first appearance since March 12, playing 22 minutes as a substitute.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Earthquakes Hire John Wolyniec as Technical Director

The San Jose Earthquakes announced last Friday that the club has hired John Wolyniec as Technical Director. Wolyniec will work closely with General Manager Chris Leitch in setting the overall strategy for the club's soccer operations department, as well as taking a leadership role in player development, scouting, and roster management.

EARTHQUAKES II UPDATE

Earthquakes II fell to Sporting KC II 2-1 last Friday at PayPal Park. The result snaps Quakes II's three-match unbeaten streak at home. Rudi Castro scored the lone goal for Earthquakes II and he has now scored one goal in each of the last two games.

ACADEMY UPDATE

The Quakes Academy Boys U13s and U14s defeated De Anza Force 4-0 and 3-0 on Saturday and Woodside Soccer Club 4-0 and 6-0 on Sunday, respectively. Both squads earned four different shutouts in two days, outscoring their opponents 17-0. The U15 and U17 squads had a bye week.
