Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Bethlehem, PA - The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (6-5) stumbled in Georgia on their quest to clinch a playoff spot when they fell to the Columbus Lions (4-6) 59-48. After the offense performed well under par in the first half, the Steelhawks battled back in the second, but it wasn't enough.
The Lions dominated the first half with the efforts of back up QB Marcus Jones and the defense. Jones kept the offense dangerous with the ever present threat of a run and the defense held a powerful Lehigh Valley offense to a measly seven points. The defense recorded three interceptions off Steelhawk QB Adam Bednarik. On the night Jones accounted for six touchdowns - four rushing and two passing. Going into halftime the Steelhawks trailed 35-7.
Halftime allowed Lehigh Valley to regroup and they played better in the second half. The lead was cut to 24 in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Steelhawks looking more like the team on fire that fans are accustomed to. But a four: two touchdown ratio in the fourth quarter wouldn't be enough for Lehigh Valley to overcome the deficit. Time ran out before the Steelhawks could complete the comeback rally.
Even first half struggles, the Steelhawks had some good individual stats. WR Torieal Gibson scrapped for three touchdowns and 159 yards receiving, and WR Tom Gilson hauled in four touchdown receptions and 136 yards in the air. That gives Gilson 19 touchdown catches so far this season, surpassing the Steelhawks previous single season record of 17 set by Irani DeAraujo last season. Defensively, DL Larry Ford recorded two sacks in the game.
With Richmond's loss last night to Albany, the Steelhawks still sit in third place in the league but have a very important game in Albany to finish the regular season. The Steelhawks will recover this week with a bye week and then will again travel to Georgia for their final game. They are still vying for a home playoff game as well; should things fall into place; Steelhawks front office personnel will notify all season and single game ticket holders with information for purchasing playoff tickets.
The Steelhawks will also be celebrating their season up to this point during the coming bye week. Roosevelt's 21st Bethlehem will be hosting their Post Season Party June 9th from 1-4pm; fans of all ages are invited to come out and enjoy the afternoon with the Steelhawks! Fans are reminded that 2014 season ticket deposits are now being accepted. You can reserve your seats by calling the Steelhawks front office at 610-282-3100.
