Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Last night, a three-run inning burned the Potomac Nationals. One game later, Potomac suffered a similar fate, but this time the damage came much sooner resulting in its third straight loss. The Wilmington Blue Rocks three runs in the second inning was just enough as they defeated the P-Nats 3-2 Thursday night at Frawley Stadium. The win assured Wilmington of the series victory marking the third consecutive series loss by Potomac.
Nationals starter Jeff Mandel (3-2) entered the contest coming off of his best start of the season, which came against Myrtle Beach. The right-hander showed signs of dominance throughout his 5 1/3 innings with five punch-outs including striking out the side in the bottom of the fourth.
But two-out hits once again plagued Potomac and proved to be its downfall. In the second, Jeff Howell provided a two-run double and Anthony Seratelli followed with an RBI single all coming after two outs had been recorded. The three runs were all that the Blue Rocks would muster against Mandel and Atahualpa Severino, but proved to be enough.
The Nationals answered with consecutive runs in the third and fourth when Brian Finegan and Francisco Plasencia had RBI groundouts pulling their club within a run. Everett Teaford (5-2) though, outpitched his counterpart, lasting six innings with six strikeouts while allowing two runs and three hits.
The P-Nats bats were shut down by the Wilmington bullpen and advanced just one runner past second base after the fourth inning. Aaron Hartsock, Henry Barrera, and Carolina League All-Star Tyler Chambliss blanked the Nationals offense over the final three frames. Chambliss earned his second save in as many nights and his 15th of the season by striking out Brian Peacock with Boomer Whiting standing on second base representing the tying run.
The Nationals fell to 0-26 when trailing after eight innings. They have scored just five runs in four games. Potomac will try to avoid being swept for the first time this season tomorrow night in game three of the series. Luis Atilano (0-0, 3.06) is scheduled to pitch for Potomac against lefty Paul Mildren (0-1, 3.27). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
