Eagles Top Titan 3-1 in Season Opener
BATHURST- Playing their first game with a name and new logo on Friday night in Bathurst, the Cape Breton Eagles were victorious 3-1 against the Titan on the strength of two goals by Egor Sokolov.
The bulk of the scoring was done in the first period, and it was Sokolov, who had arrived from Columbus just hours before the game, that got the scoring started. After some sustained offensive pressure the Russian forward found himself with an open goal and wired it to give the visitors the 1-0 lead at 8:18.
Less than four minutes later the Eagles would have the opportunity to add to their lead on the power play as Benjamin Roode was in the penalty box. But instead it was the Titan who would equal the score- coming through the neutral zone with speed, Shawn Element flipped a backhand deke over Kevin Mandolese to knot the score at 1.
The Eagles would leave the period with the lead, however, as Liam Kidney finished a passing play that began behind the net to put Cape Breton up 2-1. That would be the score until deep into the third period, although the middle stanza would feature no shortage of drama.
In the opening four minutes Mathias Laferrière would be hit hard behind the net by Element. The Eagles took exception to the play, but no penalty was called. On the ensuing shift Element was taken to task by Eagles forward Shawn Boudrias. The two players were each given a game misconduct for participating in a staged fight, and Laferrière also did not return to the game after suffering the injury.
Bathurst was unable to tie the game despite outshooting Cape Breton in the second period and in the third period the Titan were held to just five shots. With two minutes remaining in the third period, Bathurst coach Mario Durocher elected to call a timeout after his team iced the puck. Once Bathurst cleared the zone, goaltender Tristan Bérubé left the net for the bench and an extra attacker.
The move did not pay off as just 11 seconds later Egor Sokolov would win a battle for the puck in the neutral zone, and hustled into the Titan zone to hit the empty cage and secure the Eagles win.
The game marked the QMJHL debuts for Eagles rookies Jérémy Langlois, Ivan Ivan, David Doucet and the Eagle debuts for off-season acquisitions Jarrett Baker and Cole Fraser.
The same two teams will face off tomorrow at 4 PM, and you can hear all the action beginning with the pre-game show with Patrick McNeil at 6:30 on 1270 AM CJCB or online at www.cjcbradio.com
