Colorado Eagles News Release
Windsor, CO â The Colorado Eagles will unveil their mascot Friday, May 30, 2003 at an after-hours fund raising party in Greeley benefiting Weld County Partners, Inc., the team's front office announced today.
The name of the Colorado Eagles' mascot, "Slapshot", was chosen through a name-the-mascot contest held in October 2002. Approximately 200 children from Northern Colorado entered the contest by filling out ballots with the name they favored.
"The children were instrumental in picking the mascot's name," said Ralph Backstrom, President and General Manager of the Colorado Eagles. "Slapshot is one of the few mascots that will actually depict the sport it represents."
Immediately following the contest to name the Eagles' mascot, Jim Jensen, Director of Marketing, began the process of designing Slapshot's look. Jensen hired Sugar's Costumes Studio Inc., in Toronto, Canada to complete the concept of the robust, athletic looking Slapshot.
"We (the Colorado Eagles organization) believe Slapshot will prove to be a big hit," said Jensen. "He won't be the cuddliest mascot in the league but, then again, our intention was to have him embody the character of the Colorado Eagles hockey team: strong in character, a fierce competitor, and an impressive sports personality."
Slapshot, himself, is very excited to finally have the opportunity to meet all of his fans and the many children who were responsible for naming him.
"I am super excited to have landed in Colorado! Ever since I was born on October 16, 2002, I have dreamed of representing a winning team," said Slapshot. "My friends have been so supportive and I am so happy that my fans were able to name me. Just wait until you see my slap shot!"
The "Meet the Eagles" party will be held at the Oasis Banquet Center in Downtown Greeley. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. and will continue until 8:30 p.m. A $5.00 per person donation will be requested with all proceeds benefiting Weld County Partners, Inc. The party will be catered and feature live music from three different bands.
Sponsors include The Greeley Tribune, Oasis Banquet Center, Pioneer Press, American Eagle Distributing Co., MediaTech Productions, Advanced Direct Marketing, Inc., Johnny Carino's, KFKA Radio, Wells Fargo Bank, Envirotech Services, Inc., The Training Ground, Pelican Lakes Golf Course, Doug's Hang-Up, Stone Water Connection, Soul Creek, Invision, and the Colorado Eagles. All media and friends are invited and encouraged to attend.
Slapshot will begin entertaining fans at games in mid October, when the Eagles commence their inaugural season as an expansion team in the Central Hockey League. Season tickets are currently on sale. Call (970) 674-1743 for more information.
