Colorado Eagles News Release
WINDSOR, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced today the signing of forwards Chad Costello & Jack Combs, the Tulsa Oilers' top two scorers last season. The teammates ranked 9th and 10th respectively in the Central Hockey League in points in 2010-11.
"We're very excited to be bringing this duo to Colorado," said Eagles assistant coach Greg Pankewicz, who helped in their recruitment. "Both of them are highly skilled players who have had great success when playing together in the past and they should help give us excellent offensive depth. Chad and Jack will also provide our hockey team with solid leadership on and off the ice."
Costello led the Oilers with 84 points (34-50-84) in 54 games last year, ranking 3rd among the league's top scorers in points-per-game average (1.56). The 5-foot-9-inch, 170-pound forward also showed a knack for scoring timely goals in 2010-11, tying for 5th in the league with 7 game-winners -- representing over 20 percent of his goals -- and tying for 2nd with a .241 shooting percentage.
The Johnston, Iowa native spent eight games with the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters last season on parts of two separate call-ups, registering an assist. He has also played at the ECHL level, spending time with the Texas Wildcatters in 2007-08 after the conclusion of his final season at Northeastern University. Prior to his collegiate career, Costello led the USHL in points in 2005-06 as a member of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
Combs finished right behind his linemate in the CHL points race last year with 82 points (40-42-82) in 64 games. The 5-foot-11-inch, 193-pound forward ranked tied for 2nd in the league in goals (40) & tied for 5th in power-play goals (12).
The St. Louis, MO native also spent time in the AHL last season, playing three games with the Chicago Wolves. In 2009-10, Costello played 60 games in the ECHL (with the Alaska Aces & Trenton Devils), as well as three games with the AHL's Peoria Rivermen.
The Eagles will begin their preseason camp on Friday, Sept. 30. They will then travel to Alaska for preseason games on Oct. 4 & 5 before playing their only preseason game at the Budweiser Events Center on Friday, Oct. 7 against the Las Vegas Wranglers.
The 2011-12 ECHL regular season begins on Friday, Oct. 14, with the Eagles' home-opener taking place on Friday, Oct. 21. A complete schedule can be found at www.ColoradoEagles.com.
