Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles announced Monday that they have signed Paul Phillips for the 2013-14 season. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound defenseman spent four seasons at the University of Denver, including one season as an alternate captain for the Pioneers, before eventually becoming the team's captain during his 2012-13 senior season.
The Darien, Illinois native notched 28 points in 148 games at DU and would go on to be drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Phillips joins Kyle Ostrow as the second former DU captain to sign with the Eagles for the upcoming season. The duo spent two years as teammates with the Pioneers during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
"Paul is a guy that has already been a leader in the room at the collegiate level and he will now bring tremendous character and work ethic to our dressing room," said Eagles president and general manager Chris Stewart. "He comes from an outstanding program at the University of Denver and we're excited to see him launch his professional career in an Eagles uniform."
Prior to skating with the University of Denver, Phillips spent two seasons with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL. He was also named to the 2007 U.S. Under-17 Select Team and the 2008 U.S. Under-18 Select Team.
"I had the opportunity to attend several games at the Budweiser Events Center and when I spoke to Kyle Ostrow about his experience with the Eagles he had nothing but outstanding things to say about the organization," said Phillips. "The Eagles have always had great teams and they are always competing for a championship and that was a big factor in why I wanted to come here."
In addition to Ostrow, Phillips joins fellow defenseman Arthur Bidwill, as well as forwards Dylan Hood, Parker Stanfield and Greg Gardner along with goaltender Adam Brown as players officially under contract with the Eagles for the 2013-14 ECHL season.
The 2013-14 season starts begins on October 18th when the Eagles travel to California to take on the Bakersfield Condors. Colorado will make its regular season home debut against the Idaho Steelheads on October 25th at the Budweiser Events Center.
