The Spirit swept the weekend! The team earned its second weekend sweep of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Oshawa Generals Saturday and a 3-2 overtime win over the Kitchener Rangers Sunday. The team hosts the Ottawa 67's this Friday night and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds the following Saturday night.

The team is ranked 2nd in the West Division with 20 points and a record of 10-6-0-0. The Spirit are 4th overall in the conference. Week 7 Recap

The Spirit started off the weekend with a 5-1 victory over the Eastern Conference's Oshawa Generals. Captain Chris Chappell opened scoring for the Spirit, but Generals center Brett Parnham responded for Oshawa moments later. The Spirit quickly took the game with four unanswered goals, courtesy Jakub Svoboda, Adam Comrie, Tyler Murovich and Kyle Bochek. Goalie Edward Pasquale notched 47 saves on 48 shots, and also earned two assists, in the win.

The Spirit and Rangers battled through Sunday's contest, with each team posting two goals apiece in regulation. Tyler Murovich and Jordan Skellett scored for Saginaw. The game entered a 4-on-4 5-minute overtime, where Jack Combs secured the win with a goal 1:45 into the OT. The Spirit earned 2 points thanks to the 3-2 win, for 4 points on the weekend.

Week 8 Preview

Ottawa 67's

The Spirit host the Ottawa 67's Friday night at TheDow Event Center. The 67's enter the week riding a two game win streak and pushing the top spot in the conference with 20 points and a record of 10-8-0-0. Ottawa is ranked 2nd in the East Division and tied for 2nd in the Conference.

Winger Corey Cowick (14G 3A) has been a dominate force up front for the 67's, posting 14 goals in 18 games. Center Thomas Kiriakou (10G 8A), rookie winger Tyler Toffoli (5G 12A) and center Michael Latta (5G 11A) also contribute on offense. San Jose Sharks first round pick Logan Couture (3G 8A) enters his fourth season with Ottawa.

Defenseman Tyler Cuma (1G 4A), a first round pick of the Minnesota Wild, is a leader on the blue line and has a solid corp of young talent behind him. Rookie defenseman Derek Hartwick (2A) has a team high plus-4 in 14 games. Goalie Chris Perugini has been between the pipes for 14 contests this season, posting a 2.55 goals against average and 0.911 save percentage.

Friday's game marks the last time legendary OHL coach Brian Kilrea will be coaching the 67's on Saginaw ice with his pending retirement from coaching.

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds

The Spirit host their West Division rivals, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Saturday night at TheDow. The Greyhounds are closing in on the Spirit for the second place spot in the West Division with 19 points and a record of 9-7-1-0.

Center Matt Caria (8G 12A) enters his fourth season in the OHL, playing for his hometown Greyhounds in his overage year. The team boasts several other scorers in center Matthew Lyall (9G 9A), center Michael Fine (6G 8A) and winger James Livingston (8G 4A).

Michael Quesnele (3G 11A) and Jacob Muzzin (2G 8A) provide veteran leadership on defense and also find time to chip in on offense. Rookie goalie Bryce O'Hagan and Cody St. Jacques have shared duty in net this season; each goalie has played in 10 games this season.
