Eagles' Nest Notes: The Weekly Spirit Preview

The Spirit enter the week at 19-13-0-0, with 38 points. Saginaw is in second place in the OHL West Division and sixth the OHL Western Conference. The Spirit were 1-2 in the last week before Christmas, with a 9-6 loss in Mississauga, a 3-2 win in Owen Sound and a 5-0 loss in Guelph.

The Spirit resume with three games beginning Wednesday, December 28th versus the Erie Otters and concluding the week on the road in Sudbury and Barrie.

Away at the Tourney: Spirit forwards Michal Birner and Tom Pyatt are away at the World Junior Tournament. Underage forward Zack Torquato is with team Ontario for the World U-17 Challenge. All three will return in early January.

Erie Otters @ Saginaw Wednesday, December 28th 2005 7:11 PM The Dow Event Center

The Spirit are 0-1 against the Otters, with a 4-1 loss in Erie on October 1st. The Otters are 13-16-3-1, with 30 points in fifth place in the OHL Midwest Division, seventh place in the OHL Western Conference. The Otters have lost their last three games.

Erie arrives in Saginaw without the services of their top two scorers, Michael Blundin and Ryan O'Marra, who are teammates of Spirit forward Tom Pyatt on the Canadian National Junior team. The Otters recently added forward Adam Berti and defenseman Brett Nasby from the Oshawa Generals, Overage goalie Josh Disher has logged the majority of the time in net for Erie.

Saginaw @ Sudbury Wolves Friday December 30th, 2005 7:30 PM Sudbury Community Arena

The Spirit are 1-0 against the Wolves this season, with a 6-3 win on October 8th. Michal Birner and former Wolf Ryan McDonough had two goals each in the contest. Sudbury is in fourth place in the OHL Central Division, sixth in the OHL Eastern Conference with a 17-14-1-1 record, good for 36 points. The Wolves are 4-5-1-0 in their last ten games.

The Wolves will play without some key producers, as defenseman Marc Stall and forward and fourth overall 2005 NHL draft pick Benoit Pouliot are away with Team Canada for the World Junior Tourney. Underage center Brett Parnham is a teammate of Zack Torquato's in the U-17 challenge as well.

Nick Foligno, son of GM/Head Coach and former Detroit Red Wing Mike Foligno, leads the Wolves in scoring in his NHL draft-eligible season. Veteran goalie Kevin Beech anchors Sudbury between the pipes.

Saginaw @ Barrie Colts Saturday, December 31st 7:30 PM The Molson Centre

The Spirit are 0-1 against the Colts with December 10th's heartbreaking 2-1 loss on a last-minute goal at the Dow. The Colts lead the OHL Central Division and are second in the OHL Eastern Conference, with a 22-10-1-2 record, good for 47 points. The Colts are 7-2-0-1 in their last ten games.

Barrie will play without underage forward Blake Parlett, who is on the U-17 Team Ontario squad. Standout forward Bryan Little leads the Colts in scoring with 63 points before the Christmas break. Newfoundland native goalie Dan LaCosta is getting the lion's share of time in net for Barrie.
