Birner Earns Team Czech Spot for World Junior Tourney

Saginaw Spirit forward Michal Birner is among 21 fellow Czechs on Team Czech Republic as the World Junior Tournament begins today (Monday, December 26th) in British Columbia.

The 19 year old native of Litomerece, The Czech Republic is one of four OHL'ers on the roster. Birner has 16 goals, 26 assists and is +13 in 29 games with the Spirit this season.

Saginaw acquired Birner in a trade with the Barrie Colts in December, 2004. He is expected to return to the Spirit in early January, after the World Junior Tournament.

Birner joins Spirit forward Tom Pyatt at the tournament. Pyatt earned a spot on Team Canada before Christmas. Spirit forward Zack Torquato is also away from the Spirit at the World U-17 Challenge in Saskatchewan.
