PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The host Colorado Eagles easily handled a team composed of CHL All-Stars by an 8-4 mark in the 2009 CHL All-Star Game Wednesday night at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Colorado. Named the game's Most Valuable Player, Eagles' forward Konrad Reeder registered four goals on five shots along with one assist and was a plus-5 rating. Laredo Bucks rookie forward Darryl Smith was named MVP for the CHL All-Star team with one goal and one assist. Arizona Sundogs forward and leading vote-getter Joel Irving netted one goal on four shots.
Different from All-Star Games of past, this season's showcase game pitted the Colorado Eagles against a team composed of CHL All-Stars from across the league. The format change was reflective of the early days of professional hockey, when the Stanley Cup champions would take on the All-Star team.
Reeder opened scoring in the game with his first of four just 1:12 into the contest from Kevin Ulanski and Ed McGrane. Greg Pankewicz pushed Colorado's lead to 2-0 at the 8:41 mark with his record-setting ninth career CHL All-Star goal before Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees defenseman Nicolas Dumoulin found the back of the net with just 45 seconds to play in the opening frame. Despite trailing 2-1 at the end of 20 minutes, the CHL All-Stars outshot the Eagles 18-9 in the period.
The All-Star team outscored the Colorado squad 2-1 in the middle period to tie the game at three goals apiece heading into the final period of play. Smith and Odessa's Russ Moyer each converted for the CHL team in the second while Reeder netted his second goal and third point of the night in the middle frame.
Colorado exploded for five unanswered to open the third and final period Wednesday night en route to their 8-4 victory. Reeder tallied two, including a shorthanded effort, while McGrane, Riley Nelson and Jay Birnie each added one before Irving slammed home a rebound chance with 1:50 to play in the contest.
Despite falling 8-4 to the Eagles, the CHL All-Stars outshot Colorado 49-31 in the contest. All-Star starting netminder and Andy Franck (OKC) stopped seven of nine shots through nearly 20 minutes of play while Laredo's Sebastien Centomo turned aside 16 of 22 shots in 40 minutes of play. Andrew Penner started in net for Colorado and blocked 25 of 27 shots while Morgan Cey steered clear 20 of 22 shots faced. Each team converted on one power play opportunity, something rarely seen in All-Star Games of the past. The CHL All-Stars finished 1-for-5 on the power play while the Eagles converted on 1-of-3 man-advantage chances.
The Sundogs and the rest of the league resume regular season play Friday. Arizona heads on the road for two-straight away from Tim's Toyota Center before returning to Prescott Valley for a season-long eight-game home stand. The Sundogs first battle the Texas Brahmas Friday night at 6:05pm (Arizona time). The game can be heard via tape-delay beginning at 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
