Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
FREDERICTON - The Saint John Sea Dogs were defeated by the Cape Breton Eagles 3-2 on Saturday night at the Aitken Centre in Fredericton in their final pre-season game of the year.
Saint John was coming off a 7-2 win over the Charlottetown Islanders last night while Cape Breton was playing their first pre-season game in close to three weeks. The Eagles were without Egor Sokolov, Kevin Mandolese, Mathias Laferriere and Shawn Boudrias who were attending NHL training camps while Saint John was missing Maxim Cajkovic who is currently attending Tampa Bay Lightning camp.
The Eagles came out on fresh legs after their extended time without a game. Saint John picked up the pace to settle the game down but it was the Eagles striking first as Jarrett Baker found space and snapped a shot past Bouthillier.
The teams exchanged penalties through the period most notably Alex Drover and former teammate Shaun Miller served roughing penalties after the two shared words in front of the Eagles bench.
Eagles led the shots in the first period 16-9.
Brady Burns tied the game 6:45 into the second period with a nifty toe drag through the slot. Burns had a pair of goals in last night's win over Charlottetown.
Less than a minute later, Dawson Stairs gave his hometown crowd something to cheer about when he sniped home the go ahead goal at 7:42.
The Eagles would then tie it halfway through the period on a 2-on-1 conversion from Ryan Francis.
Saint John had two power play opportunities in the second half of the frame but couldn't capitalize. They closed the shots gap trailing 22-21 as the headed to the third period locked up at two a piece.
Seven minutes into the period Jeremie Jacob was stopped on a breakaway with the puck coming the other way and it was Alex Farladeau who blasted a shot from the point to put the Eagles in front 3-2.
Nicolas Guay thought he had the tying goal midway through the third as he tipped in a point shot past Grimard but the goal was called back for a high stick.
The Sea Dogs had a trio of power plays down the back stretch of the third. Joshua Roy came within inches of blasting home a one timer but Grimard stuck the leg out for the highlight reel save.
With under two minutes on the clock Bouthillier skated from his net for the extra attacker. Saint John pushed on but the Eagles held on for the win, 3-2 the final.
The Sea Dogs will have a short break before opening the 2019-20 season at home with the first ever game on TD Station ice on Friday, September 20th. Tickets are available at the TD Station box office or online.
