Blitz Slow Down Coyotes, Fall Short

The Central Valley Coyotes (6-4) came to Bakersfield with the number one scoring offense in the league, averaging 62.1 points per game. The Bakersfield Blitz (4-6) held the Coyotes to 39 points, but were only able to put up 37 points of their own. At the end of the day, the Coyotes won, 39-37.

Central Valley QB Clay Groefsema was 19-36 for 275 yards and 4 touchdowns. The signal-caller from Redlands University also ran the ball 6 times for 17 yards and 1 touchdown. Groefsema's favorite target on Sunday was WR Tonae Martin who caught 9 passes for 132 yards and 1 touchdown. Martin had 7 receptions and 99 yards in the first half.

QB Chad Elliott (Syracuse, '01) was 5-10 for 68 yards and 1 touchdown before suffering a leg injury late in the second quarter. He was replaced in the third quarter by newcomer QB Dan Riley (Quincy, '04). Riley was 9-16 for 130 yards and 4 touchdowns. He ran the football twice for 19 yards.

WR/DB DeRonn Finley (Idaho State, '01) had 7.5 tackles, 2 pass breakups and 1 interception on his way to being named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. Central Valley OL/DL Donyell Booker was named U.S. Army Ironman of the Game. He had 1 touchdown reception and was in the Bakersfield backfield all day long. Booker had 1 sack.

"We've got to forget about this one pretty quick," said Bakersfield Head Coach Gary Compton (East Texas State University, '90). "We've got a short week and we've got to get our minds right for Stockton."

The Blitz will travel to Stockton to take on the Lightning (4-6) on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Blitz defeated Stockton, 45-42 on April 21st. The Blitz return home on Saturday, June 30th to take on the Laredo Lobos (1-9).

Blitz Team Up with Houchin Blood Bank

The Bakersfield Blitz are proud to announce that the organization has teamed up with Houchin Blood Bank to raise awareness for the need for blood donations in Bakersfield and Kern County.

"We are enthusiastic about our new relationship with the Bakersfield Blitz," said Houchin Blood Bank CEO Greg Gallion. "Partnering with organizations like the Blitz and their fans will help us meet and sustain the blood requirements for Kern County."

The Blitz has pledged to get 1,600 new donors to sign up to donate blood in 2007. Fans will be invited by the players, coaches, Blitz Girlz and Blitz staff members to sign up at each home game this season. Once the goal of 1,600 sign-ups is reached, all fans in attendance will be treated to free ice cream. In addition, Blitz fans who donate blood during the week of June 24 - June 30 will receive a free ticket to game on Saturday, June 30th. Donors also eligible to enter into a drawing to win an opportunity to be name "Honorary Team Captain" on game night and the chance to win a "signed jersey" from all the Blitz players.

"We're very excited about our new partnership," said Blitz President/General Manager Andrew Watkins. "Houchin Blood Bank has done an amazing job to date and we look forward to helping them continue doing great work."
