Houston Dynamo FC News Release
HOUSTON, TX (Wednesday, August 19, 2009) -- The Houston Dynamo play their first game in the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League, the regional club championship tournament, tonight when they host two-time defending Salvadoran champion Isidro Metapán at Robertson Stadium at 7 p.m. The game is the first of six for the Dynamo in Group A, one of four groups in the 16-team group stage. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals in March 2010.
The game can be heard live on 790 The Sports Animal and seen on a one-hour tape delay on Fox Soccer Channel. The Dynamo are also at home on Sunday, August 23, taking on Western Conference rival Seattle at 7:30 p.m.
The Dynamo (0-0, 0 points) come in as one of the favorites in Group A along with Mexican power Pachuca, an old rival of the Dynamo. The Dynamo are 1-0-1 all-time against Salvadoran teams. Houston qualified for the tournament by finishing second in the 2008 MLS regular season. The Dynamo are currently tied for the MLS lead in points with Columbus and lead the Western Conference by seven points.
Isidro Metapán (0-0, 0 points) has won the last two Salvadoran championships and qualified directly to the group stage after losing in the qualifying rounds last year. Metapán opened its domestic campaign last Saturday with a 3-0 loss to rival FAS. The club is led by 38-year-old Salvadoran goalkeeper Alvaro Misael Alfaro and Panamanian forward Anel Canales.
The Dynamo are expected to be without up to four regulars for the game, including: forwards Kei Kamara (quad) and Cam Weaver (hernia surgery) and defenders Richard Mulrooney (knee) and Eddie Robinson (knee).
The Houston Dynamo are a Major League Soccer franchise that won two MLS Cup championships in its first three seasons and qualified to represent the United States in four consecutive regional championships.
